Beautiful Handwriting Still Matters
Recruiting scribes for hand-addressing projects.

I am The Proper Penman. I'm a long-time resident of southern Marin County, and I operate a small letter shop that prepares direct-mail campaigns for businesses, nonprofit organizations, as well as personal clients.
Most mailings these days are printed and machine addressed. Occasionally, however, a client wants something more personal—a hand-addressed envelope that stands out from the rest of the day's mail. Those projects require real handwriting, not computer-generated fonts.
Rather than outsourcing this work to anonymous workers across the country, I'd rather build a dependable network of local “scribes.” Scribes are independent contractors—neighbors who appreciate good penmanship and take pride in careful work.

Something You Learned in Elementary School
The ideal Scribe writes cursive that is neat, consistent, attractive, and, above all, easy to read.
Particular interest is given to those who are proficient in:
• Copperplate (pointed-pen calligraphy)
• Spencerian script
• Palmer Method cursive
• Zanerian script
• Zaner-Bloser
• D’Nealian Cursive
• American Cursive
• Other traditional cursive styles
Don’t know your style? No problem. If you were in the third grade between 1925 and 1970, it’s probably Palmer Method. But that doesn’t matter. And formal calligraphy training isn’t required. While decorative handwriting is certainly appreciated, clear and consistent penmanship is even more important. Every address must be attractive while remaining easy for postal employees to read.

Who I’m Looking For
How the Work Works
Once accepted, you'll be added to my roster of qualified independent contractor Scribes.
When client work becomes available, you'll be offered an assignment that includes:
• Blank envelopes
• A mailing list
• Written instructions
• A completion deadline
You'll complete the addressing from your home and return the finished work according to the project instructions.
Compensation is paid on a piece-rate basis according to the number of envelopes successfully completed. Rates vary depending upon the handwriting style required for the project, with Copperplate, Spencerian, and Zanerian scripts generally commanding the highest rates because of the additional skill and time they require.
Most new contractors begin with relatively small assignments. Experience has taught me that many people enjoy the idea of being paid for their handwriting but discover after completing their first project that it simply isn't for them. Starting with a modest quantity allows both of us to determine whether the work is a good fit without wasting supplies.
As you demonstrate reliability, accuracy, and an interest in continuing, larger assignments may become available.
How the Work Works
Where I Currently Operate
At present, I'm recruiting independent contractor Scribes who live in southn Marin County, California, specifically, Sausalito, Mill Valley, Tiburon, Corte Madera, Greenbrae, Larkspur, Ross, San Anselmo, and Fairfax.
Envelopes are surprisingly expensive, and shipping supplies back and forth quickly becomes cost prohibitive. Keeping the network of Scribes local allows project materials to be provided efficiently.
Depending on the assignment, supplies can either be picked up at an arranged location or I can deliver them to you free of charge. There is never any charge for project materials. As the business grows, the contractor area may expand.
Where I Currently Operate
Independent Contractor Relationship
This opportunity is offered on an independent contractor basis.
You are free to accept or decline individual assignments. There are no required schedules, minimum hours, or promises of ongoing work. Each project is offered separately with its own completion deadline and compensation.
Independent contractors are responsible for their own tax reporting and any other obligations associated with self-employment under applicable law. Acceptance into the contractor roster does not create an employer-employee relationship.
Quality Comes Before Speed
Every envelope represents one of my clients and often serves as the recipient's very first impression of that organization.
For that reason, I place the greatest value on:
• neat, consistent handwriting
• excellent legibility
• accurate spelling and punctuation
• careful attention to detail
• dependable completion of assignments
Speed is appreciated—but quality always comes first.
How to Apply
Applying couldn't be simpler. Take a blank envelope of any size, style, or color and hand-address it in your normal cursive handwriting as follows:

Please enclose a slip of paper containing your name and your email address (or mailing address if you don’t do e-mail). Seal the envelope, affix a first-class postage stamp, and place it in the mail. Your envelope itself serves as your handwriting sample. If your handwriting appears suitable for upcoming projects, I'll contact you with additional information. There is no need to send a résumé or other materials right now.
If Your Handwriting Isn’t Quite Ready Yet
Not every aspiring Scribe will be accepted immediately—and that's perfectly all right.
Many adults haven't written cursive regularly in years. Others simply never had the opportunity to learn traditional handwriting styles such as Palmer Method, Spencerian, or Copperplate.
If I believe your handwriting shows promise but isn't yet ready for client work, I'll let you know.
Whenever possible, I'll recommend reputable online resources where you can practice and improve your handwriting. After you've had some time to work on it, you're welcome to submit another handwriting sample.
There is no limit to the number of times you may apply.
I'd much rather help someone develop a skill than simply say "no."
Is This One of Those Envelope Stuffing Scams?
That's a reasonable question.
Many people remember advertisements from years ago promoting "envelope stuffing" opportunities that required applicants to purchase over-priced supplies, pay “security deposits,” or buy instructional materials before receiving work.
That is not my business model.
I will never ask you to purchase envelopes, buy supplies from me, pay a “security deposit,” purchase training materials, or send money to me for any reason. The only expense involved in applying is the envelope and First-Class postage stamp you choose to use for your handwriting sample.
If you're accepted, all project materials are provided at no cost.
Current Recruiting
I'm currently building a roster of qualified local Scribes in preparation for substantial mailing projects expected to begin in late summer or early fall.
This advance recruiting period provides time to review handwriting samples, answer questions, explain project procedures, and have everything ready before production begins.
